Project / Contribution (2023–2025): The Use of Platelet-Rich Plasma in the Healing of Obstetrical Wounds
Award Category: Innovation & Breakthrough Treatments
For those who have introduced new techniques or protocols into clinical practice, using advanced regenerative technologies.

Project/ Achievement Title
“Use of Platelet-Rich Plasma in Obstetrical Wound Healing”

Short Description
My project is part of my doctoral thesis and explores the application of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in obstetrical surgery. I included 100 patients, of whom 50 were injected intraoperatively with PRP and 50 formed the control group. Results were analyzed using several validated scales (Manchester, POSAS, Vancouver, VAS, NRS, REEDA) at 7 and 40 days postoperatively. The study demonstrated visible and validated improvements in scar quality and patient recovery. The work is already in the process of ISI and PubMed publication.

Full Description

How did the idea come to you?
From my personal experience in the operating room, I observed that post-cesarean recovery remains a sensitive point for most patients. I asked myself whether we could bring regenerative medicine closer to obstetrical practice.

What inspired you?
Specialized literature on the use of PRP inspired me to explore the applicability of this method in cesarean section surgery.

How did you put it into practice?
I designed an approved clinical protocol, included 100 patients, and applied a standardized technique of PRP collection, centrifugation, and injection. Of these, 50 patients were injected intraoperatively with 10 ml of PRP (5 ml before hysterorrhaphy and 5 ml subcutaneously before skin closure). The control group consisted of 50 patients who underwent surgery without PRP injection.

What obstacles did you face?
Initially, it was difficult to obtain patient consent for participation in the study, but counseling and clear presentation of the benefits increased the acceptance rate. It was also necessary to train the team for a uniform technique.

What steps did you take for implementation?
I conducted a prospective randomized study, collecting clinical data and evaluating scars with validated scales at 7 and 40 days postoperatively, along with control ultrasound examinations.

What impact did it have?
Results show that PRP use reduces inflammation, accelerates healing, and improves scar appearance. The project was well-received by both patients and colleagues, opening the way for the integration of regenerative therapies into obstetrics.

What did you learn from this process?
I learned that innovation in gynecology requires courage, scientific rigor, and good communication with patients. I also understood the importance of using multiple evaluation scales to capture both the objective and subjective benefits of a new therapy.

Evidence of the Achievement

  • Observation sheets and validated scales used (Manchester, POSAS, Vancouver, VAS, NRS, REEDA)

  • Scientific articles in progress/accepted for publication in ISI and PubMed journals

  • Recommendation letters and patient testimonials regarding their positive experience

Thank you for the opportunity to present this achievement and for supporting young doctors who wish to bring innovation closer to clinical practice.

About Ana-Maria Brânzeanu

I am a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology, with clinical experience in both public and private hospitals, as well as a university lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine in Constanța. I am passionate about regenerative medicine and innovation applied in gynecology. In my research, I have sought to combine surgical practice with modern solutions for tissue repair, aiming to improve patient recovery. I believe in the interdisciplinary value of medicine and in the idea that clinical progress comes from applied cohort studies. My goal is to contribute to the creation of better standards for obstetrical patient care.
