Project / Contribution (2023–2025): Restoring Femininity for Patients Diagnosed with Breast Cancer
Award Category: Clinical Excellence
For those who, together with the multidisciplinary tumor board, look beyond survival and focus on the quality of life of patients. Reconstructing the breasts, but also helping women regain their femininity, dignity, and confidence.
It refers to the fact that the entire multidisciplinary team (tumor board) is now focusing not only on survival but also on the quality of life of patients.
We reconstruct breasts, but we must also help women regain their femininity.
Project Title – Restoring Femininity for Patients Diagnosed with Breast Cancer
Proposed Section – Clinical Excellence
I am a Senior Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology, PhD in Medical Sciences, with subspecialization in Gynecologic Oncology. For more than 13 years, I have been part of the team led by Professor Alexandru Blidaru, who has dedicated most of his work to the early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.
In oncology, teamwork is essential, as all decisions are made within the multidisciplinary board (tumor board). In recent years, these committees have increasingly turned their attention not only to treatment plans but also to the quality of life of patients.
Our team was the first in Romania to introduce the concept of sentinel lymph node biopsy and oncoplastic breast surgery, organizing training events for colleagues, who in turn have begun to train others. The purpose of these initiatives is to achieve the best possible oncological and aesthetic outcomes in the treatment of breast cancer.
However, an important issue for these patients is the loss of femininity. Even though they have beautifully reconstructed breasts, the induction of menopause in young patients comes with difficult-to-tolerate side effects.
My efforts began in collaboration with oncologist colleagues who have increasingly focused on these adverse effects, and together we are working to manage them so that oncological patients can enjoy the best possible quality of life — from oocyte preservation to the treatment of vaginal atrophy.
